First off, let’s acknowledge the different skin types we equestrians wrangle with. We’ve got the oily folks, who generously produce enough sebum to nourish a small village. Then there are the dry skin riders, whose faces are drier than the Sahara desert. And let’s not forget the sensitive skin gang, whose delicate dermis requires gentle maintenance.

Now, when it comes to acne, we encounter a whole army of blemishes too. We’ve got the classic pimples, the sneaky whiteheads lurking beneath our helmets, and the stubborn blackheads claiming our nose as their permanent residence. It’s like a rodeo of skin issues up in here! However, with the right skincare routine and a little humor, we can conquer this acne terrain and rock that flawless equestrian glow!

Lets first start with a general routine created by Acne Specialist and Master Esthetician and founder of Home of Horses, Joy Pfister. Joy has been successful in treating acne with a 96% clear rate for over 4 years. She is an expert in the field of acne.

“To truly fight acne – you first have to understand what type of acne you have. Throwing just any products at acne, just becasue its labeled “acne fighting” does not always work. In this blog post I am going to give you a very general overview from Dry skin to Oily skin. I have chosen products that are easy to find on Amazon. If you would like an individual skin care routine for your acne, I can set one up for you by doing a phone consultation, and setting up a program for you” Get clear skin before your next show!

People are using the wrong products, cleansers that are way off base, salicylic acid products piling up like they’re gonna save the day, and don’t even get me started on those folks living in the land of prolonged topical antibiotics. All of these moves are just making that acne scream louder and uglier than ever!

The Acne Skin Care Battle

When it comes to tackling my acne, I approach it like assembling two fierce teams. Picture it: Team Acne and Team You. Our mission? To conquer those pesky acne players. But first, we gotta understand this opposing team. Who are these players (aka acne) that we’re up against? Once we nail that down, trust me, defeating acne is gonna be a piece of cake.

how to stop breaking out

There are 4 different types of “acne players”

  1. Whiteheads: These are also known as closed comedones. They form when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. The top of the clogged pore is closed, creating a white or flesh-colored bump.
  2. Blackheads: Blackheads, or open comedones, occur when hair follicles are clogged, but the pore remains open. The black color is not due to dirt but is the result of the oil and skin cells reacting with the air.
  3. Papules: Papules are small, red, inflamed bumps without a visible center. They can be tender to the touch and are often the result of the immune system responding to the clogged pores.
  4. Pustules: Pustules are similar to papules but have a white or yellow center due to the presence of pus. They can be painful and are often referred to as pimples.

From this list we now have to figure out which products work to defeat which players. This is where I can help! Lets start with a DRY SKIN Overview of products that can help.

Earth’s Care Acne Spot Treatment – 10% Sulfur Cream Medication to Clear Cystic Acne, Pimples and Blackheads on Face and Body (Tube 0.97 OZ)

Sulfur is great for Papules: Papules are small, red, inflamed bumps without a visible center. Adding this in the evening a few times a week, can really help.

Natural Outcome Mandelic Acid 10% | Anti-Aging AHA Facial Serum with Hyaluronic Acid | Targets Fine Lines, Dark Spots, and Wrinkles | Clarifies Acne and Stimulates Natural Collagen Production | 1 Oz

Mandelic acid is your big player here.

  1. Exfoliation: Mandelic acid is known for its exfoliating properties. It helps to remove dead skin cells from the surface of the skin, which can improve the texture, tone, and overall appearance of the skin.
  2. Gentle: Compared to some other AHAs like glycolic acid, mandelic acid is considered gentler on the skin. It has larger molecular structures, which means it penetrates the skin more slowly. This makes it a good option for individuals with sensitive skin.
  3. Benefits: Mandelic acid is used to address a variety of skin concerns, including acne, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. It can help unclog pores, reduce the appearance of blemishes, and even out skin tone.

Paula’s Choice CLEAR Oil-Free Moisturizer, Lightweight Face Moisturizer for Acne-Prone Skin, Pore-Minimizing Niacinamide, Soothing Antioxidants, Ceramides to Calm Redness

  1. Ceramides: Ceramides are natural lipids found in the skin that help maintain its barrier function. This moisturizer contains ceramides, which can be beneficial for individuals with acne-prone skin, as they help keep the skin’s protective barrier intact.
  2. Hydration: While being oil-free, this moisturizer still provides necessary hydration. It’s important to keep the skin moisturized, even if you have acne-prone skin, to prevent it from becoming overly dry and irritated.
